Steve Aoki: here’s why I throw cakes!
Steve Aoki… how many of you immediately associate his name with one of the most anticipated parts of his live set: cake-throwing?
Yes, we admit it, cake-throwing from the stage during the Drop of the track is a fantastic gimmick.
Of course, it does perhaps distance us from the traditional idea of a DJ set, given that the cake-throwing renders it a bit more like a DJ show. But if his goal is to entertain us, he manages to do so brilliantly.
But why cake-throwing? We find out the answer during an interview released to the “Thump” colleagues; he got the idea from a videoclip for an Autoerotique release that featured the famous cake-throwing. The reason for it, Aoki continues, is far more “intense”: he does it because he’s a very anxious guy. He releases all his anxiety by throwing the cakes and making all the “numbers” of his show. And anyone who has read all the requests that he receives to have him in their club knows how anxious he is…
