EDM Podcasts: 5 Radio Shows to Stream and Follow
Dance music and radio culture have always gone hand-in-hand. Even with the digital-era ease of finding and downloading new music 24/7, there is nothing quite like hearing new tracks (or new spins on old tracks) in the mix. Popular EDM podcasts like Tiesto’s Club Life, Armin Van Buren’s A State of Trance and Above and Beyond’s Group Therapy are always worth a listen. The same goes for nearly every show on stations like Rinse FM or Triple J, which are always jam-packed with exclusives, label takeovers and guest DJ cameos.
However, these old standards only begin to scratch the surface when it comes to curating a well-rounded EDM podcast playlist. For some deeper cuts and refreshing takes on dance music, we made a list of 5 radio shows to stream and follow.
01. Metropolis, KCRW for NPR
DJ and all-around tastemaker Jason Bentley has been taking over the airwaves from KCRW’s radio station in Santa Monica, California every Saturday evening since the early ‘90s for two hours of carefully-curated EDM. Any given episode of “Metropolis” mixes newly-released tracks from labels like Dirtybird, Spinnin Deep and Warp with some deeper cuts and classics. Several years’ worth of the show can be found on NPR’s website.
02. Beats in Space
Tim Sweeney has been transmitting Beats in Space from New York University’s WNYU studio every Tuesday since 1999. The show has become something of an institution in the world of electronic dance music, often featuring guest mixes from the likes of Jamie XX and Nicholas Jaar among countless others. New Yorkers can tune their radios to 89.1 FM on any given Tuesday evening to hear the label head’s weekly mix; everyone else can listen in via Sweeney’s Soundcloud.
03. Night Owl Radio
Pasquale Rotella, founder of Insomniac Events’ annual massive Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC), shares his love of everything beneath the electric sky on this weekly podcast. Each episode features guest appearances from some of the biggest names in EDM including DJ Snake, Bingo Players, Caspa, Bassnectar and Goldie just to name a few featured so far. Grab it for free on iTunes.
04. Diplo & Friends for BBC Radio 1Xtra
Diplo has already proven his production prowess with countless releases, both as himself and with collaborative projects like Jack U and Major Lazer. The Mad Decent label lead continues to prove his skills as tastemaker and curator via his weekly BBC Radio 1Xtra takeover, Diplo & Friends. Each episode features his “friends,” who happen to all be A-list DJs including Zeds Dead, Nina Las Vegas and so many more. Stream it and check out the archive on BBC’s website.
05. NOISIA Radio
For anyone who has ever daydreamed about NOISIA’s track library, the Dutch trio’s bass-heavy podcast should hit the spot. Each hour-long episode is stacked with tons of drum’n’bass, dubstep and everything in-between. If you’re looking to cull some choice cuts from underground, up-and-coming, or super old school bass artists, search no further than the Soundcloud archive for NOISIA Radio.
